A few years ago, my family and I traveled to Park City, Utah for our annual summer getaway. We decided to reserve a vacation rental property rather than book a traditional hotel room for the trip. Our overall experience was fabulous and our host/property manager was gracious, but I quickly realized that staying in a private rental residence offered a few challenges I had not anticipated.
There was only one plastic trash bag in the kitchen. A germy sponge in the sink was aged and well-used. Soap dispensers around the home felt diluted even while their contents were harsh on the hands. And, when we went to wash our clothes, only one non-eco-friendly laundry detergent pod was readily available. While I hoped this situation was an exception to the vacation rental rule, it wasn’t. Future family adventures in rental properties offered similar situations.
Sure, it’s not hard to go to a local store and buy cleaning products. But these items usually come in quantities that are larger than needed for a family vacation. That means either leaving the remaining supplies behind for future vacationers – no fair! – or packing them up and lugging them home in already stuffed luggage – no way! Plus, who really wants to do mundane shopping for essential cleaning items and first aid supplies instead of enjoying some much desired and deserved R&R? Not me or my family members!
